The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, also known as the Harmonized System of tariff nomenclature is an internationally standardized system of names and numbers to classify traded products. It came into effect in 1988 and has since been developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization, an independent intergovernmental organization based in Brussels, Belgium, with over 200 member countries.

This classification is designed to be used by customs administrations in external trade matters. It is now applied by almost all countries in the world. The official interpretation of the Harmonized System (HS) is given in the Explanatory Notes (5 volumes in English and French) published by the WCO.
